We are so impressed by Derek's work with our son. Our son is always happier after his sessions with Derek because Derek provides the perfect amount of challenge to keep him curious about new math concepts without giving too much information that could get him frustrated. Our son's performance in math has steadily improved over these past 5 weeks of working with Derek and we are huge fans of Derek's tutoring. Thank you, Derek!"

Why Derek's Academic Tutoring?

Get Clear!

Are you looking for help with math, physics, or chemistry?

I can help to clarify the confusion - math should make sense! Multimodal, I am able to draw on different ways to explain the same concept so that you can understand.  I'll meet you where you are and build from there so you can reach where you need to go conceptually.

Build your foundational skills, understand and complete your homework, improve your test scores, raise your grade, and finish that course in style!

Engineer turned Teacher turned Tutor

Initially trained in environmental engineering, I made the switch to teaching after spending two years as a volunteer teacher abroad. From there, I went on to earn my Masters in Teaching at Seattle University and to teach at public and private schools in Washington, totaling 10+ years. I've tutored elementary students for whom English is a second language in math, tutored calculus, taught geometry and algebra, high school physics, and introduced a new curriculum to my high school for the honors chemistry class, which I also taught.  I have completed my credentials to teach in Alberta, Canada, but am really enjoying tutoring, which I've done since 2019.

Simple conversation - noticing patterns

I'm a big fan of learning by inquiry (especially for science and geometry), which involves trying something out and exploring it a bit, then processing what you experienced through conversation and critical thinking. I understand that not every student is looking for this, though, so if you're just looking to get through tonight's homework or prepare for a test, I'm there for you, too!

Rates

One of my first students described how they had spent over $100/hour at one of these drop-in tutoring centers for several days but didn't see the kinds of results in sense-making that they'd seen with me in much less time.
